It’s the super-fight to end all super-fights! Conor McGregor! Floyd Mayweather! Bunches of exclamation marks to make sure you know that this is a big deal!

And it might actually be a real thing that is happening. That’s a what a report from Britain’s The Sun is saying, at least, with the paper reporting that the only thing standing in the way of the deal being an agreement for the purse.

So how much of that is true? Are they actually going to pull the trick on this? Well, let’s go over the facts. Here are the quotes from “a source” from the Sun:

“Floyd went mad after Conor said he would crush him and knock him out in 30 seconds, he’s obsessed with making Conor eat his words. Floyd is calling the shots. It’s strictly boxing and Conor will have to lose roughly 25 lbs. It was agreed in principle on May 2, but Floyd wouldn’t reveal the identity of his opponent until last night when he told friends he’ll be fighting Conor.”

Ok, that sounds about right. Floyd would easily be the one in control of a match with Conor. While Conor is a big name, he much, much smaller than Mayweather in terms of the actual promotion game and overall mainstream visibility.

Floyd also has an ongoing feud with McGregor, and has previously spoken about the subtle racism of labeling white fighters that talk smack as entertaining while labeling black fighters that talk smack as “cocky” and “arrogant” (which is true, but also kind of tone deaf to the fact that Floyd gets a lot of heat for being a serial woman abuser). Unlike many people that have called out McGregor have been ignored, Mayweather actually DID fire back about Conor.

The big elephant in the room, obviously, is that Conor McGregor is still a contracted UFC fighter. All reports suggest that, while Conor has his own unique deal with the UFC, he is still penned to an exclusivity clause that SHOULD prevent him from taking a boxing match of any kind (or a kickboxing match, etc.).

So if it is true that Conor vs. Floyd is happening, expect an ugly legal battle to go down first.
