In what is a less-than-surprising announcement after yesterday’s controversial drug test results, 2 time UFC champion (In two different weight classes, having beaten Anderson Silva and Jon Jones) Chael P. Sonnen is finally calling it quits. It’s weird, when you think about it… We were expecting to see Chael vs Wanderlei at the end of TUF Brazil 3, and now it appears that whole fiasco (Well, mostly the new TRT rules…) has gone on to retire both fighters.
It’s unclear what the UFC is going to do with the middleweight and light heavyweight belts that were both vacated by Sonnen, but this opens up the doors to some very exciting title fights.
Chael Sonnen was one of the most polarizing figures in mixed martial arts. Some people loved him, some people hated him. Some people didn’t really “get” him, some people got his schtick and still hated him. Nobody is neutral when it comes to The American Gangster.
There’s not much else to say at this point besides that we really can’t blame him for wanting to spend more time with Mrs. Sonnen…
